How do infants learn the sound patterns of their native language, and when do they begin distinguishing between sound sequences that are permitted versus not permitted in Spanish words?

This experiment seeks to examine the time course of infants’ learning of the sound patterns of their native language. For this purpose we first present infants with a speech stream which consists of both sound patterns that are allowed to form a single word in Spanish (permitted words) and ones that are not allowed to form a single word in Spanish (ill-formed words). Subsequently, we present them both permitted words and ill-formed words in isolation to see which words they are more interested in. By monitoring infant attention throughout the experiment, we can identify what they know about sound patterns of their native language.
