What days and times are available to schedule appointments?
The UCLA Language Acquisition Lab has appointments available from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, as well as some Saturdays. If you’re interested in participating but are unsure of your availability, please give us a call and we’ll do our best to work around your schedule.
Where is the lab located?
The UCLA Language Lab office is located on the UCLA campus in room 2207 on the 2nd floor of Campbell Hall. Upon exiting the elevator, we are across the hall to the left and one door down. There are butterflies and monkeys on our door and with a sign next to it that says “Language Lab”, you can’t miss it!
We know that the UCLA campus can be tricky to navigate, so scheduled participants will be greeted by a UCLA Language Lab staff member and directed to our dedicated parking space in Parking Lot 5 and escorted to the lab. Will my child’s data be kept confidential?
Any information that is obtained during your visit that can be identified with you and your child will remain confidential and will be disclosed only with your permission or as required by law.
Is there childcare for other children?
Absolutely! Let us know before the appointment and we’ll make sure to have a research assistant available to play with the other children while you are occupied with the study.
Will I be with my child at all points during the visit?
Yes, you will be holding and interacting with your child throughout your appointment. In fact, your presence is essential! Our studies work best when the child feels comfortable and safe with you nearby. For more information about the procedure of studies run at the UCLA Language Lab, please click here.
Where can I find more details about your studies?
For more details about the studies we are currently conducting, please click here. If you still have questions please do not hesitate to call (323) 364-8845 or email us: uclalanguagelab@gmail.com.
I have friends with young children who may be interested. Can I refer them to you?
You sure can! We are always looking for families who are interested in participating in research. Please tell them to call (323) 364-8845, or email us: uclalanguagelab@gmail.com for more information about the studies we are currently conducting.
What do you do with the results of the studies?
Your child’s results are immediately aggregated together with the results of other children their age. We analyze the results by looking at averages over a large group of children, to see how typically-developing children are reacting to our stimuli. Once we have collected enough data, we write a paper describing our findings. These findings are then published and contribute to the language acquisition literature. How did you obtain mine or my child’s information?
At some point in time you received a letter asking if you were interested in having your child participate in developmental research which came with a small yellow card titled “UCLA Developmental Research Subject Pool.” After you filled and sent out the card, we received it and inputted your information into our database, which we share with 3 other labs!

Are we obligated to participate if we no longer want to?
No, you can always opt out from participating in a study or at a specific lab. You can also ask to be removed temporarily or permanently from our database.
